Precarious Employment

URGENT * LONG TERM PRECARIOUS EMPLOYMENT WITH THE ILO

On 30 September 2002, the EGM adopted a Resolution requesting notably that the SUC intervene with the Administration to reconsider implementing decisions concerning non-renewal of contracts for colleagues under long-term precarious employment conditions.

We have serious doubts on the manner in which circular 630 and instructions concerning contracts initially due to come to an end on 15 December are implemented in Geneva and in the Field. We are about to send to the Legal Adviser a request for clarification of the relevant provisions in this respect.

Meanwhile, should you be confronted with an emergency situation due to the non-renewal of your contract, do not hesitate to immediately call upon the Staff Union so that we may provide you with the needed support. Our co-ordinator for precarious employment issues is Martine Humblet (6756).

The new Staff Union Committee has established a Working Party bound to identifying possible solutions to precarity within the ILO. This Group already met, and will contact with staff employed under precarious conditions early in January * in order to gain better knowledge of their situation to be able to help them out more efficiently.
