With the situation as
it is in the United Nations and in the agencies
of the common system as a whole, our Staff Union
needs to be strong. Everyone is beginning to feel
the crunch in the face of the administrations’
apparent determination to dismantle the United Nations
system. And things are getting worse every day.
Ultimately,
every country, every economic sector, every worker
is affected, and the United Nations, for all its
prestige, is no exception.
Do
young workers really want precarious employment?
Do older workers really want multinational corporations
to handle their pensions? Should the United Nations’
mandate really depend on market forces?
The
United Nations’ fragile staff union movement
needs to combine forces. So long as our senior management
resigns itself to the situation - when it isn’t
actually part of the problem - it is we who have
to defend the values of the United Nations and the
fulfillment of its mandate.
The
old slogan “United we stand, divided
we fall” has never been truer than
today.
Your
Staff Union is organizing a major membership drive,
starting on
Thursday 11 May at midday, at R.2 North
(in front of the cafeteria)
