Long Service Recognition Award

Geneva, 8 December 2004

At the request of the Union side on the Joint Negotiating Committee, the Administration has decided to organize an annual Recognition Award ceremony for all staff members who have completed 25 years of service for the ILO. This ceremony will be held on the same day across the world. The decision appears all the more symbolic given the current state of affairs in the UN common system. An ILO united in recognition of the value attached to long-term employment is a strong message to send out to the other Organizations - none of which, to our knowledge, has a similar approach. In Geneva, the Chair of the Staff Union Committee will address the ceremony following the Director General's statement. The same pattern should be followed in all duty stations where a ceremony will be held.

Recognition for long service is also recognition of the right to employment security within the United Nations!
