Wednesday, 30 January v. Les Plots
Score: Won 3-2
MVP: Prabhat

Following a long, unexplained break from his duties (yes, work has a way of interferring with these things - the nerve), your faithful President and rapporteur is back on the job!...

Another battle of epic proportions. Another win. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Team ILO has struck again. After going two sets down and with their backs against the wall, there was only one thing left to do: start thinking about dinner! Ok, I'm kidding. Actually, all we had to do - and it really wasn't THAT difficult - was win the next three sets. Walk in the park. Piece of cake. Easy-peasy. "All you gotta do is ... win."

The first two sets were a little ugly. One minute we were playing with all the skill of a championship team and the next minute we looked like we had never seen a volleyball before in our lives. Hello, Mr. Ball. Frustrating? Yes, but part of our charm. You see, we never do things the easy way (as any seasoned supporter - and I'm sure there are at least a few of you out there - will know). This game was a case in point. This having been said, it's not like we "gave" the sets away. We still managed to score 23 and 20 points respectively. Between Arne's and Aase's attacking, Alex's blocking and good defense from Alison, Jen and Hilary, we put up an excellent fight. We also managed to engage the enemy in some very long volleys, most of which, I'm happy to report, we won. However - and here comes the crunch - our serve receptions once again let us down with balls flying off our arms at angles that most mathematicians would have a hard time calculating.

It was now the start of the third set, we were two sets down and had to win the next three. This could only mean one thing: Only 65! A battle cry which will take its place alongside "Remember the Alamo" and "Win one for the Gipper", "Only 65" rang through our ears and through our bodies to give us the strength and skill to fulfil our destiny. One point at a time we watched as the opponents crumbled as a barrage of attacks came raining down on them, backed up by some solid defense, particularly from Mary.

Prabhat WAS the fourth set. There's not much else to say. Whether attacking, blocking or bumping, the Doc was on fire. All you gotta do is ... play like Prabhat!

Entering the fifth set, we had victory in our sights. We had seen the opponents' spirit change from "Oh, yeah, we've got this one in the bag" to "Oh, no, we're gonna lose". Well, who are we to contradict them? Right from the start we obliged them and took off to an early lead. Despite a momentary lapse of concentration in the middle of the set, point after point we widened the gap until we finally sealed the win at 15-8.

So there you have it. Talk about a come-back! What made this particularly enjoyable was the fact that it was truly a team effort. Everyone played a vital role at different points in the game and no one let the side down. Whether we lost together or won together, the important thing is that we did it together. Well done to all of us!

Monday, 4 February v. Mixatus
Score: Won 3-2
MVP: Lazslo

1) This match summary is courtesy of Jenison, an individual - or two - who did not wish to be identified.

"The first two sets went pretty well, despite the ceiling which was too low and the net which was too high (or so some claim). We won both sets fairly easily. Nice Hustle, everyone. (That’s Hustle with an ‘H’!).

In the third set we dug ourselves an 11 to 1 hole (mostly Emmanuel’s fault, with a little help from Alison, but let’s not rub it in) and could not dig ourselves back out. We went down 25 to 17 In the fourth set, we gave up another significant lead 9 to 2 right off the bat. Then we added to that serve receptions to everyone BUT the setter and a major mixup in rotation that left us discombobulated and disgruntled. To try and salvage the situation, Emmanuel attempted to behead one of the opposition, a women with glasses (shame on you coach), with one of his prize spikes. As her team comprised only six players she had to recover, which she did, despite what would most likely be a nasty shiner. All this was still not enough to save the set, so off we toddles towards our favourite pass time, a 5th set tie breaker.

For once this final set proved no problem and we took it 15 to 5. Du gâteau, or should I say du penne pesto (inside joke chaps)."

2) And this summary is from Spikey:

"Hi,

Instead of a match summary:

Well, we won 3:2.

I will not write a match summary, but you can easily write your own version:

- Go to last season's match summaries.
- Choose any summary which says "well, we should have won 3:0 but somehow we seem to enjoy the excitement until the last minute".
- Select "copy" and then "paste" on this year's match summaries.
- Replace the team's name by "Mixatus"
- Add one final sentence "Finally, I would like to know when our trainer will target the opposite court instead of the players."

Wednesday, 20 February v. ITU
Score: Won 3-2
MVP: Alex

Wow, what a rollercoaster ride! My head's still spinning! We took the first set in pretty comfortable fashion.

The game started on a high with a pretty easy win in the first set. In fact, it was perhaps a little too easy...

In the second set our coach decided to get all experimental on us and had us play in positions we weren't really used to. Guess what, we lost. Ok, I know that we're supposed to be able to play different positions but ... Anyhow, that was low point no. 1.

The third set was a real doozy. Still on a low from our ... er ... performance in the second set, we very obligingly conceded an almost insurmountable lead of 17-5 (or thereabouts) to the ITU. Down but not out, Hilary came to serve and almost single-handedly brought us back into the game with about a dozen fantastic serves which the opponents were, for the most part, unable to handle. Having scrambled back from the brink of totally humiliating annihilation, we levelled the score at 20-20 and, from that point on, we were locked in a battle of wills. With every point one team scored, the other would scrape together a point of their own. The fortunes of both teams changed with each serve as match point after match point came and went. Finally, at 33-32, we (again) thought to ourselve 'Could this be the one?'. If the last 12 points had been anything to go by, probably not. Fortunately, by the grace of the God of 'Will you please just get it over with', we sealed the win on the very next point and took the set 34-32.

The final two sets were nothing to write home about. We fumbled around in the fourth set but then found ourselves again in the fifth and took it quite easily. All in all, though, it was a heck of a ride.

Wednesday, 6 March v. Viry 2
Score: 3-2
MVP: Aase

Hmmm, let's just say that the team we started to play against back in January - before one of them went and broke his shoulder - was NOT the same team we faced on Wednesday. Either that or we suddenly forgot how to play volleyball - although we shouldn't discard that possibility too quickly...

Ok, let's face it, they were a strong team. It was a pretty close match the whole way - except for the third set when we failed to take the court, or so it would seem from the score line - but the lesson to be learnt is simple: Don't send your substitutes up against us or we're gonna pound 'em!

Tuesday, 12 March v. WIPO
Score: 1-3
MVPs: Elaine and Gerhard

After spending the first half-hour of the game actually looking for the gym (except for some of us, Elaine, who knew where it was and didn't think to come and find us!), we had a quick warm up and got down to business. Having not had much time to warm up, however, we decided to use the first set as a warm-up session and voluntarily ... uh ... er ... umm ... "conceded" the set in rather disastrous fashion.

Moving swiftly on to the second set ... well, what can I say? We were finally warmed up and, dare I say it, unstoppable (not really a word that has been easily associated with us this season, it must be said).

The third set? We plead the Fifth.

The fourth set was rather frustrating. Having taken the lead early on and having held on to it until 21-17, we only needed four itsy bitsy points to take the set and even the game at two apiece. Unfortunately it wasn't to be. A bad bump here, a serve into the net there and wam-bam they're back in the game - not to mention a spike or two from their coach who attacks from the stratosphere.

Ok, we took a hit here but had a good time getting clobbered. Truth be told, we went into the game knowing that we probably weren't going to win and that, because of this, we had nothing to loose. Well guess what: we played really well! The summary doesn't do justice to just how well we played, particularly Elaine and Gerhard who must have overdosed on Cherios or something! We're a little like those old Timex watches: we took a licking but keep on ticking.

Wednesday, 27 March v. CERN 2
Score: 3-2
MVP: Laszlo

Hmm, I can't really remember what happened during this match other than it was a good match against an ever-improving team. If anyone has anything to add to this, please let me know.
