In 1985, an association called "Musique et Temps Libre" (M & TL) was established for promoting musical activities in the ILO.
M & TL seeks to stimulate interest in all forms of music and to encourage the practice of music among ILO staff members, in particular through: 1) piano lessons; 2) concerts; 3) the ILO choir; and 4) exchanging information among ILO staff interested in music.
Membership of the association is open to all officials and members of their families, as well as retired ILO officials. The membership fee is SF30 per year. Membership of M & TL is compulsory for all those wishing to enrol in the piano and music theory classes and to use the two pianos in the ILO.
M & TL organizes music theory seminars and piano lessons for students of all levels, including beginners. Officials have a choice between private, individual classes and group classes. For further information, please contact Althea Wright-Byll (ext. 7741) or Sue Evans (ext. 6325).
Concerts are organized from time to time in the ILO cinema (and sometimes in the colonnade) mostly at lunchtime. These concerts have so far been mainly of classical or folk music, but we would equally welcome jazz or pop musicians. If you know of any individual musicians or groups who would be interested in performing in the ILO, all suggestions would be greatly welcomed.
There is a choral group, which gives a Christmas carol concert each year in December and sometimes another concert in the Spring. The choir is also open to non-ILO singers. We would welcome new members - preferably with some previous singing experience and especially basses and tenors. Please contact Anton von Knorring (776 46 93) or May Hofman Ballerio (ext. 7842).
The association has a room at the R.1 North level (R1-162). It has a small white baby grand piano, which can be used by members of M & TL. There will be a notice board which can be used for the exchange of information about music.
In addition to the activities sponsored by M & TL, there is a record lending library with a large collection of CDs and LPs of all types of music. The premises of the club (R1-154) are open each Thursday from 1 to 1.30 p.m. and from 5.15 to 6 p.m. Membership is open to serving and retired officials. For further information, please contact Sylvie Pichelin (ext. 7705).
If you desire further information about M & TL or have any proposals or suggestions, you may contact Anton von Knorring (776 46 93) or Althea Wright-Byll (ext. 7495), or write to us at Musique et Temps Libre, either through the internal mail or via Case Postale 500, 1211 Genève 22.
