        8th European Regional Meeting
        The 8th European Regional Meeting of the ILO will take place here on 9-13 February amid growing concerns over the impact of the global financial crisis on the world of work in Europe and Central Asia. The meeting, held every four years, brings together representatives of governments, workers and employers from 51 European and Central Asian ILO member States and provides a unique platform for discussing policy responses to important employment and social challenges.

        304th ILO Governing Body - The Governing Body is the executive body of the International Labour Office. It meets three times a year. It takes decisions on ILO policy, decides the agenda of the International Labour Conference, adopts the draft Programme and Budget of the Organization for submission to the Conference, and elects the Director-General.

        International Women’s Day - This year, the theme for the celebration is “Work and family: The way to care is to share!” based on overwhelming evidence that a level playing field at work, for women and men, can only be achieved by an equitable sharing of unpaid work in the home and family.

          ILO’s 90th Anniversary - In 2009 the ILO celebrates its 90th Anniversary, against a backdrop of financial crisis and critical levels of unemployment around the world. Looking to the future means understanding the past, and as such the ILO’s 90th anniversary celebrations world wide focus on the theme of "90 years working for social justice" with a strong forward looking element, asking how the ILO's experience working through crisis can add a unique voice to the present day response to economic crisis.

          World Day for Safety and Health at Work - World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an international campaign to promote safe, healthy, and decent work. This year, as in previous years, tripartite events will be taking place world wide, and a number of products are available from this Web page to support those efforts. You are invited to join us in promoting this important day.

            Presentation of the Director-general’s global report on forced labour - In a new study on the patterns of forced labour worldwide, the ILO says the “opportunity cost” of coercion to the workers affected reaches over USD 20 billion per year. The report, entitled “The Cost of Coercion”, also details the growing number of unethical, fraudulent and criminal practices that can lead people into situations of forced labour, and calls for increased efforts to eradicate the practices.

              98th session of the International Labour Conference - Some 4,000 representatives of government and employers’ and workers’ organizations are to meet in Geneva on 3-19 June to search during the annual Conference of the International Labour Organization for an effective response to the growing impact of the economic and financial crisis on employment, social protection and the world of work.

              World Day Against Child Labour - The World Day Against Child Labour will be celebrated on 12 June 2009. The World Day this year marks the tenth anniversary of the adoption of the landmark ILO Convention No. 182, which addresses the need for action to tackle the worst forms of child labour. Whilst celebrating progress made during the past ten years, the World Day will highlight the continuing challenges, with a focus on exploitation of girls in child labour.

                  International Migrants’ Day - The ILO Office in Rome, in collaboration with the IOM, organizes a conference on “Protecting migrants’ rights: measures adopted by Governments and international institutions”. This initiative should offer an opportunity for better understanding UN international instruments for the protection of migrants’ rights, and the way single States can enforce these instruments, taking into account migration developments during the last years. The Minister of Labour, Health and Social Policies, Maurizio Sacconi, will take the floor during the conference, together with representatives of social partners and international institutions.
