Kazakhstan
10 June 2013

In May tripartite partners in Kazakhstan – representatives of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, the Ministry of Health, the Federation of Trade Unions of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the National Economic Chamber of Kazakhstan Atameken Union, the Confederation of Employers and the Republican Association of Mining and Metallurgical Enterprises - signed a memorandum of understanding on HIV/AIDS and the World of Work.

The memorandum is targeted at preventing HIV/AIDS in the workplace and stopping discrimination and stigma against HIV-infected people as well as at providing support and assistance to people living with HIV.

The parties consider it important to use international standards and experience as well as international obligations of the Republic of Kazakhstan in prevention of HIV/AIDS in the workplace, in particular the 2011 United Nations General Assembly Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS, the ILO Recommendation concerning HIV and AIDS and the World of Work, 2010 (No. 200), the ILO Code of Practice on HIV/AIDS and the World of Work, the ILO Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 1981 (No.155), etc.

The signatories stressed importance of further deepening cooperation with the world community and international organizations, in particular with the ILO, first of all, as concerns preparation and future ratification of conventions that contribute to the fulfillment of the memorandum’s goals (the ILO Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 2006 (No. 187)).

Moreover, they also noted the need for including the HIV/AIDS prevention related activities in the workplace into the occupational safety and health management system.
