In all, 4,500 HIV cases have been officially logged in Tajikistan since 1991, when the first HIV infection was registered in the country, the Tajik new agency Asia-Plus reported on 1 December, World AIDS Day.

The Tajik national centre for preventing and fighting against HIV/AIDS reports that 654 new HIV-positive cases were logged in the country in the first nine months of this year, the agency says.

Tajikistan is carrying out volunteer consultation and HIV testing throughout the country on World AIDS Day today, the report adds.

In all 566 HIV-positives have been registered in the Kulob area of southern Khatlon Region, and 119 people have died of concomitant HIV infections since 1992, a separate report says. There are 130 women among those HIV-infected, and 52 per cent of them are intravenous drug addicts.
