Kazakh minister calls for reducing need for foreign workforce

The Kazakh Labour and Social Protection Ministry is planning to conclude agreements with companies with foreign participation on cutting the number of foreign workers.

"Within the framework of a new Employment-2020 programme, we are developing state-private partnership. That is, we want to conclude agreements with major companies with foreign participation, on jointly training our citizens for jobs in demand and fill in the demand with local personnel and, accordingly, decrease the annual arrival of foreign workers," Gulshara Abdykalikova, the labour and social protection minister, said at a briefing on 7 February in Astana.

"For example, this year we had certain number of foreign workers, let us change some 30-40 per cent next year. This will be specifically spelled out year by year, an agreement will be concluded ! and special centres, where our citizens will be trained, will be created," she said.

"This will be worked out with every company," the minister emphasized.

According to her, about 40,000 - 50,000 foreign workers are attracted to Kazakhstan each year.
