Kazakhstan’s parliament ratifies ILO Maternity Protection Convention

On December 19 the upper house of Kazakhstan’s parliament adopted a law to ratify the ILO Convention concerning the revision of the Maternity Protection Convention (Revised), 1952 (No. 183).

The Convention was adopted at the General Conference of the International Labour Organization in June 2000.

The Convention is aimed at ensuring maternity protection and adoption of necessary measures to protect women’s reproductive role, the parliamentary committee for social and cultural development said.

In compliance with the Convention the national legislation envisages to create working conditions for pregnant and breastfeeding women, to uphold the right to maternity leave, extended maternity leave in case of complications, the right to cash benefits and medical aid, to employment protection and non-discrimination.

According to the committee’s representatives, Kazakhstan’s ratification of the Convention confirms importance of international cooperation in maternal and child protection as well as the republic’s adherence to observance and implementation of international standards in this sphere.
