The number of unemployed in Russia increased in January 2010 against December 2009 by 10.7 percent by the International Labour Organisation's /ILO/ methodology to 6.8 million, Russia's Federal State Statistics Service /Rosstat/ said on Tuesday.
The unemployment level, which is calculated as the ratio of the unemployed to the economically active population, was 9.2 percent in January.
Over January 2010 the number of unemployed exceeded the officially registered rate by 2.8 times. This estimate excluded college and school students, and retirees, who might well be considered unemployed.
By the ILO standards, the share of unemployed women made up 44.9 percent, and that of jobless urban residents, 63.4 percent.
Unemployment in rural communities is growing faster than that in cities. In January 2010 the difference made up 1.7 times.
The lowest level of unemployment was registered in the Central Federal District, and the highest one - in the North Caucasus Federal District.
