On July 8, Georgian Prime Minister Nika Gilauri met with the chairman of the Georgian Trade Union Confederation (GTUC), Irakli Petriashvili.
Trade unions have objections in relation to the effective Labour Code and they prepared their own legislative initiatives. In particular, these initiatives envision longer maternity leave, shorter work hours and new layoff procedures.
Petriashvili said at this stage of the talks the government and trade unions failed to reach an agreement on unemployment assistance.
The tripartite talks among the government, trade unions and employers are monitored by the International Labour Organization.
