The number of Russia's jobless comprised 6.5 million in May, according to the International Labour Organization's Methodology to calculate unemployment.
The country's federal statistics service made public these figures on Thursday.
According to preliminary estimates, in May the number of able-bodied population aged between 15 to 72 years totalled 76 million, or 53 percent of the country's population. Of them 69.5 million are economically active, while another 6.5 million are jobless.
In May 2009 the number of economically active population was higher than that in February by 1.1 million or 1.5 percent.
In May the number of unemployed classified by ILO's methodology by 0.6 million or by 8.4 percent as against February, which is linked with the influence of seasonal factors. As against May 2008 the number of unemployed was higher by 2.4 million or by 1.6 times.
