Wal-Mart boycotts Uzbek cotton
30 September 2008. Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, said on Tuesday it was asking its suppliers to stop using cotton from Uzbekistan, joining a boycott by global brands over its use of forced child labour during the cotton harvest.

24 September 2008. A new, landmark study on the impact of an emerging global “green economy” on the world of work says efforts to tackle climate change could result in the creation of millions of new “green jobs” in the coming decades.

Uzbekistan adopts national action plan to eliminate worst forms of child labour
15 September 2008. On September 15, Uzbekistan’s government adopted a national action plan to implement ILO’s Minimum Age Convention (C138) and the Convention Concerning the Prohibition and Immediate Action for the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labor (C182). These two conventions were ratified by Uzbekistan in April.
ILO to consider new guidelines on ship inspection under 2006 Maritime Labour Convention
15 September 2008. More than 300 senior representatives of seafarers and ship-owners, along with governments, are to meet here between 15 and 26 September to discuss guidelines on flag-state and port-state inspection on board of ships under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) adopted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2006.

Kazakhstan’s oil industry accounts for the highest OSH expenditures
10 September 2008. Kazakhstan’s oil industry accounts for the highest expenditures on occupational safety and health (OSH), Kazakh Labour and Social Welfare Minister Berdibek Saparbayev told the forum Social Responsibility of Business 2008 held in Almaty on September 10.
Interactive evaluation workshop in Moscow
4 – 5 September 2008. The two-day interactive evaluation workshop brought together the ILO SRO Moscow team, including project staff from Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, to discuss organizational policies and practices in evaluating ILO’s programmes and projects.
ILO participates in Moscow International Book Fair
3 – 8 September 2008. The International Labour Organization together with other UN agencies took part in the 21st Moscow International Book Fair for the fourth year running. This year Moscow hosted the exhibition from September 3 to September 8.

Summer school of the Pan European Trade Union Council discussed pension system issues
29 August – 1 September 2008. From August 29 to September 1 the first summer school of the Pan European Trade Union Council in Budapest brought together 50 trade unionists from countries of the European region, including Belarus, Russia and Georgia.
