This time generously hosted by the Government of the Kingdom of Norway the European Regional Meeting, which takes place every four years, will give the Government, Employer and Worker representatives of the 51 countries of the European and Central Asian region the opportunity to exchange experiences and discuss possible responses to the financial and economic crisis that has severely impacted employment, social protection levels, social dialogue and compliance with labour law across the region.
A report by the Director General of the ILO, Mr. Guy Ryder, will provide input for the Meeting's discussions. It will address a number of important issues, such as creating job-rich growth, promoting high-quality jobs through social dialogue, tackling the problem of youth employment and demographic challenges, strengthening labour standards and enhancing policy coherence. Furthermore the Ninth European Regional Meeting aims to address the diversity within the region and its subregions as well as developing an ILO-roadmap of regional and subregional priority actions.
The Meeting's discussions will be structured around interactive parallel sessions, with Heads of State and Government invited to participate in a specific panel session on Monday, 8 April. On the evening of the same day an informal Ministerial meeting, with the participation of selected Employer and Worker representatives, will focus on the issue of youth employment, while the policy coherence discussion will involve the ILO together with major international economic and financial institutions. The representatives of the European Parliament, the European Commission and several Ministers in charge of Finance will also be invited to participate in certain panels on Monday, 8 and Tuesday, 9 April.
