Breaking barriers: Letting people with disabilities into the labour market
After the break up of the Soviet Union, life for many people in Armenia changed radically and new opportunities opened up for many. But for people with disabilities, it was not the case. During the Soviet period, they found work inside a closed system of "social enterprises". Now they are truly "invisible" in the workforce. "Immediate and urgent change of policy needed", says Guy Ryder, Director-General elect of the ILO
Assessing the employment situation in the EU at the European Commission´s Jobs for Europe conference on 6 and 7 September 2012, the ILO Director-General elect Guy Ryder said that the "drama of the European unemployment crisis" shows the need for a new policy approach. in times of crisis: The case of Greece (Working Paper No. 38)
This paper is part of a series of national studies on collective bargaining and effective responses to the crisis under the Global Product on Supporting collective bargaining and sound industrial relations. It analyses the profound impacts of the financial crisis on industrial relations institutions and practices in Greece. A series of austerity measures have been put in place through new legislation. These include prohibition of salary increases, cuts in pay and benefits for public-sector employees, limits on public-sector hiring, increases in VAT and other taxes, changes in the limitations on mass layoffs and levels of severance compensation payments, and introduction of sub-minimum wages for new entrants to the labour market and those who are on apprenticeships. - ILO Dialogue, 10 March 2012

ILO study says workplace inequality in Europe has increased
significantly since start of financial crisis
Workplace inequalities have increased significantly across Europe as a result of the global economic
crisis and will continue to do so as more and more countries introduce austerity measures and labour reforms,
according to "Work Inequalities in the Crisis: Evidence from Europe", a new study published by the International
Labour Office (ILO) and co-funded by the European Commission.
