Global Organisations

European Intergovernmental Organisations and Networks

The Network consists of two parts. First, a network of the experts working in the field of occupational health and safety, both in the Baltic countries and in the Nordic countries. This cooperation and networking is supported by well-functioning Internet (WWW/World Wide Web) and e-mail connections between the countries, institutions, and experts. The other part is the network information base which can be constructed through Internet (WWW). The focal point of this Telematic Information Network will be the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health.

The Network contains both contact information, but also factual databases when available. It contains information on ongoing projects and events of occupational health and safety in the Baltic region, training opportunities both within the region and elsewhere, informative material, and possibly information bulletin boards for discussion among experts.

CEE OSHNet is an unofficial home page of the American Industrial Hygiene Association's International Affairs Subcommittee for Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).

The purpose of CEE OSHNet is to promote and facilitate international collaborative programs in "industrial and occupational hygiene" and allied fields in Central and Eastern Europe on behalf of the American Industrial Hygiene Association and its sister European occupational hygiene associations.

The European Agency information project "The State of Occupational Safety and Health in the European Union - Pilot Study" is a first step to the development of a system for monitoring the safety and health in the European Union. It aims at providing decision-makers at Member State and European level with an overview of the current safety and health situation in the European Union and in this way supporting the identification of common challenges and priority areas for preventive actions.

The project report identifies for physical exposures, postures and movement exposures, handling chemicals, psycho-social working conditions and occupational safety and health outcome for example sectors/occupations most identified to be at risk. Further, the Focal Points and their national networks provided information on trends and needs for development of additional preventive actions related to these indicators. Implications of the "changes in working life" on occupational safety and health are also touched in this report.

The European Centre for Occupational Health, Safety and the Environment was established in 1999 within the Institute of Central and East European Studies (ICEES) at the University of Glasgow. The Institute of Central and East European Studies has been established to promote further research co-operation on and with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. ECOHSE has been created as organisational host of the ongoing European Network. Its primary aim is to serve as a focus for the exchange of academic, policy and practitioner experience. It also aims to stimulate advanced comparative academic research in the fields of workplace health, safety and the environment between countries of the EU and the Newly Independent States and CEEC.

The EEA and its wider network, EIONET, were set up in Copenhagen in 1994 in order to deliver high quality environmental information to the Member States of the European Union, as well as to the general public. The main aims of the Agency are to describe the present and foreseeable state of the environment as well as to provide relevant information for the implementation of Community's environment policy.

The European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions is an autonomous body established by the European Community by a Council of Ministers' decision in 1975. Located in Dublin, Ireland, its aim is "to contribute to the planning and establishment of better working and living conditions through action designed to increase and disseminate knowledge likely to assist this development". Its principle task is to advise the Community institutions on foreseeable objectives and guidelines by forwarding in particular scientific information and technical data.

Established in Lisbon in 1994, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) is a Community agency aimed at gathering and disseminating information on:

  • the demand for drugs and measures to reduce that demand;
  • national and European Community strategies and policies;
  • international cooperation and the geopolitics of the supply of drugs;
  • control of the trade in narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursor chemicals;
  • implication of the drug phenomenon for producer, consumer and transit countries.

The European Network for Workplace Health Promotion co-ordinates the exchange of information and the dissemination of examples of good practice in Europe. Its member organisations have committed themselves to initiate informal information networks on national level.

The European Commission has established the European Work Organisation Network (EWON) in order to foster competitiveness, employment and quality of working life. EWON aims at developing new forms of work organisation in the European Union. The web site provides access e.g. to a newsletter, event calendar, and surveys and case studies.

HSPro-EU is the acronym of the European project Health and Safety Promotion in the European Union. It will set up a remotely accessible telematics system providing a 'one stop shop' for occupational health and safety information. The project is taking place in four EU countries - Ireland, Greece, Spain and the Netherlands. The project is taking place over a period of 30 months, commencing 1st January 1996, with successive and more extensive versions of the system being progressively made available in each of the four countries. The overall aim is to develop a health and safety information system based on representative user needs which is capable of being accessed by all enterprises, though there is a special emphasis on SMEs and micro-enterprises.

ISIS is the JRC impartial centre of expertise in the multi-disciplinary analysis of industrial, socio-technical and environmental systems, the innovative application of information and communication technology, and the science and technology of safety management.

The Office for Central and Eastern Europe Initiatives (OCEEI) was established in 1993 as a unit within the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) to develop and manage IDRC activities in Central and Eastern Europe (C&EE). OCEEI employs technical expertise, project management, network-building and support services to find innovative solutions to the problems of the region with partners in Eastern and Central Europe and from other regions of the world.

European Trade Union Organisations

ETUC is recognised by the European Union, by the Council of Europe and by EFTA as the only representative cross-sectoral trade union organisation at a European level. As of October 1998, the ETUC had in membership, 65 National Trade Union Confederations from 28 countries and 14 European Industry Federations with a total of 59 million members. In addition there are 6 National Trade Union Confederations and one European Industry Federation with observer status. Other trade Union structures operate under the auspices of the ETUC. These are the Council of European Professional and Managerial Staff (Eurocadres) and the European Federation of Retired and Elderly persons (FERPA). In addition , the ETUC coordinates the activities of the 38 Inter-regional Trade Union Councils (ITUCs) which organise trade union cooperation at a cross-border level.

Founded 37 years ago on 6 September 1958, COPA is the extension of the agricultural unions that are representative at national level from all over the European Union. Today it has 30 member organisations from all 15 countries of the European Union.

HOTREC represents hotels, restaurants and cafés in the European Union. It is the recognised spokesman for the interests of 34 national trade and employer associations the hotel, restaurant and café industry of 19 European countries (the European Union, the European Economic Area and Associated Countries).

European Federation of Cleaning Industries comprises 12 national professional organisations from trade unions and employers in the cleaning sector

Occupational Medicine Centre (OMC) is part of Institute of Hygiene, which is under the Lithuanian Ministry of Health. The main fields of activities of the Institute are environmental health, occupational health, infectious diseases epidemiology, children's health and other important issues of public health.

  • is investigating the conditioning of human health having adopted a holistic and interdisciplinary approach;
  • is conducting scientific research, projects for practical implementtion and services;
  • carries out educational, diagnostic, therapeutic, rehabilitation and judicial activities;
  • ecourages actions aimed at the improvement of primary health care in the country.
