Part VI: Training

The survey also looked at the different types of safety training of workers. In the Estonian survey it appears that training in OSH-related issues was common - workers received training to do their jobs in 83.6% of the workplaces, training in the safe handling of materials in 85.5% and training in safety procedures in 90.9% of the workplaces. Training in all OSH-related issues was more common in primary production than in other industries, as also in larger workplaces.

In 87.3% of the workplaces, training was carried out by the management, and in 30% by the union. In 80% of those workplaces where training was carried out by the union, it was carried out also by the mangement. Only 41.8% of all respondents considered the training as adequate.

In 56.4% of the workplaces, the management had produced some education material on occupational health and safety, and in 16.4% on the general environment. 17% of the respondents said that their union had produced some education materials on occupational health and safety, and only 1.9% said that their union had produced some education materials on environmental issues.
