Part VI: Training

The survey also looked at the different types of training of workers for safety. Training to be able to carry out a job was common, in 85.8% of the workplaces. Training in the safe handling of materials in general was received in 84.9% of workplaces, and training in safety procedures in 82.9%.

In 90.5% of the workplaces, training was carried out by the management, and in 25.8% by the union. It was more common that training was carried out by the union in the budget sector and in public owned enterprises than in the private sector. It was also more common in the service sector than in other sectors of industry.

67.7% of all respondents considered that the training was adequate. The percentage was higher (85.3%) when the training was given by the union. In workplaces with some degree of foreign ownership training was considered more often as adequate than in domestically owned workplaces. Once again, the importance of unions in overall health and safety considerations at the workplace is confirmed.

In 56.2% of the workplaces, management had produced some education materials on occupational health and safety, and in 19.9% on the general environment. 33.1% of the respondents said that their union had produced some education materials on occupational health and safety, and 11.5% said that their union had produced some education materials on environmental issues.
