Forum on Occupational Safety and Health
Organized by the ILO and Federation of Employers of Ukraine (FEU)
22 April 2008, Kiev, Ukraine
The one day Forum on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) formed part of the SIDA-funded project to assist the Federation of Employers of Ukraine (FEU) in raising the profile of OSH amongst its members and to obtain the capacity to offer services to its members on OSH. It followed from the three day training delivered by Mr Wiking Husberg, Senior Specialist in OSH, ILO SRO Moscow and his colleagues the previous week for some 40 employer nominees. It was a key event to mark Ukraine's Health and Safety Week (brought forward because of a public holiday on 28 April).
Some 200 participants not only from FEU members but also from Trade Unions, Government Departments, Members of Parliament, and Labour Inspectors throughout the country were actively engaged in the discussions throughout the day. This was an excellent opportunity to take the first steps to raise the profile of OSH and put in on the national agenda in Ukraine. The National OSH PROFILE as recommended by the ILO summaries the current situation including data on injuries such as the type and severity; sectors where they most occur, etc. This can in turn be used as a comparative tool to measure progress. The enthusiasm of the participants was such that the ground is ready for further work on developing an OSH profile and then the policy, systems and programme as set out in Convention 187, to be progressed.
