Within the framework of technical advisory assistance provided by the
ILO-CEET to the government of Romania in the area of labour law and industrial
relations, a study tour to Italy for government officials was organised
on 20-24 October 1997. The purpose of this visit was to familiarise the
participants with the operation of the judicial system in settling labour
disputes in Italy. The study group was received by representatives of the
Italian judiciary system, the government (Ministry of Labour and CNEL),
as well as independent academics. In particular, the participants were
interested in learning about the role of pretore in the settlement of labour
disputes. In the Italian judiciary system, these are single judges of first
instance, with authority to rule on individual labour disputes (grievances)
and social security issues. The Romanian participants expressed the wish
for further assistance in improving their judicial system, especially with
regard to the introduction of speedy procedures for the settlement of individual
labour disputes, also taking the Italian experience into account. GC
