Strengthening ILO Assistance to Albania

After the difficult events that Albanians have faced since the beginning of the year, leading to the nomination of a new Government of National Reconciliation and intervention of a multinational military force, the ILO has continued to provide assistance to the Ministry of Labour in the area of tripartism and industrial relations. This reflects the strong belief that strengthening the Social Dialogue can only contribute to Albania°s progressive return towards democratic life. The first meeting of the National Council of Labour after the events, which was held on 23 April, was a very promising sign in this regard.

In order to further reinforce this process, ILO-CEET also organised a study visit to Rome in late May by a tripartite group of Albanian wage experts, led by the new Minister of Labour, Mr E. Sherifi. During this visit, the Albanian delegation met the main social and political actors in Italy in order to better understand the main features of the Italian system of collective bargaining and industrial relations. This visit also contributed to the consolidation of the relationship between the Albanian and Italian Governments, providing an opportunity for Mr. Sherifi to sign an important co-operation agreement (on social aid) with the Italian Minister of Social Assistance, Ms L. Turco. Mr Sherifi also met with his Italian counterpart, Mr T. Treu, to prepare an active co-operation effort between the two Ministries of Labour. No doubt such international assistance and bilateral co-operation will help Albania to overcome its current social, economic and institutional crisis. DVW
