In January, the workers' activities specialist of the Team addressed leaders
of the Czech and Moravian Chamber of Labour in Prague. Trade unions'
access to ILO services and closer cooperation with the Team were of
particular interest, as well as the multinational enterprises.
The meeting was chaired by Richard Falbr, who was elected president of
CMK at their Congress in April. He is also a member of the ILO
Governing Body and chair of the ICFTU (International Confederation of
Trade Unions) Coordinating committee on central and eastern Europe.
The Czech unions are strongly opposed to the government's plans to limit
the possibilities for civil servants to exercise their rights to organize and to
bargain collectively. Also of concern are the activities of multinational
enterprises investing in central Europe. Kari Tapiola, also a member of the
ILO Governing Body, spoke on that subject.
After the division of the country, Czech and Slovakian trade unions have
organized themselves into two confederations. Both belong to ICFTU.
