Tripartite Seminar on Forms and provisions of daily childcare in Hungary
18th September 2009, Budapest, Hungary
Organized by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour and the International Labour Office through its Subregional Office for Central and Eastern Europe
For parents who work or would like to work, assuring appropriate care facilities for their children is a problem almost everywhere. The lack of adequate childcare facilities that address the needs of working parents and their employers has important implications for women’s labour force participation and gender equality. It also has repercussions for workplace productivity, economic development, child development and the well-being of families and society as a whole. To review the possible solutions for Hungary, the Hungarian Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour in cooperation with the International Labour Office (ILO) organized a seminar entitled “Forms and provisions of daily childcare in Hungary” on 18th September 2009 in Budapest.
The Seminar discussed – with the presentation of international and Hungarian good practices – child care possibilities made available through the co-operation of employers and workers and by other possible actors, in addition to the traditional state organized solutions. There was a presentation by Ms. Verena Schmidt of the ILO on global perspectives on work and family, followed by Ms Katalin Tardos, IBS Budapest on the situation of working women and child care provision in Hungary. Ms Erika Katonáné-Pehr, Head of Department in the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour informed the participants about the impact of the changes in the family support system on child care. Furthermore, good practices from Hungarian companies and trade union views were shared.
