» December 3: International Day of Disabled Persons: The ILO’s Activities in Central and Eastern Europe

The objective of the Labour Market Indicator Library Network project is to contribute to an increase in the use of labour market information in formulating economic policies. The project is focussing on consolidating the Labour Market Indicators Library (LMIL) Network that aims at providing appropriate products and technical assistance in increasing the availability and timeliness of reliable and relevant labour market indicators at international, regional and national levels. The regional component of the project purports to expand the network to the 17 countries covered by the ILO SRO-Budapest Office. Data from 1980 up to the present have been collected for all the countries and indicators have been constructed accordingly.
A sub-regional experts’ meeting on labour market indicator information in selected Stability Pact countries of South-Eastern Europe, namely Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, has been held in Budapest in September 2003. The main outcome of the seminar was a greater awareness of the importance of labour market information as a prerequisite in formulating and monitoring labour market policies. Guidance was provided to participants on internationally comparable methodological standards. Exchanges and co-operation have been enhanced as a basis for an active regional partnership.
The follow-up activities are concentrated on the use and the dissemination of the LMI, the objective being to help basing the observation of labour market developments as well as the design of labour market policies on sound empirical information. In the six countries concerned experts provided time-series on five LMI that are of particular importance for the respective country. These data together with a brief analysis of the labour market situation were then disseminated to the social partners and civil society in the form of flyers which contain the graphic representation of the series together with a brief analysis both in English and the national language.
