Our Mandate
The International Labour Organization brings governments, workers and employers
together to create peace by promoting justice and human rights at work.
It fights for decent work and transfers know-how to 180 countries through technical cooperation.
Founded in 1919, the ILO is now part of the United Nations system.
Following the creation of a "field correspondent" office shortly after the Second World War, the ILO's representation
in Brussels was upgraded in 1973 to become the "Liaison Office of the ILO with the European Communities
and the Benelux Countries".
The Brussels Liaison Office represents the International Labour Organization
in the Benelux countries (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg) and at the European Union's Institutions
(European Commission, European Parliament, European Economic and Social Committee and Council of the
European Union) and reports developments in the European Union and the Benelux countries
to the ILO Headquarters in Geneva.
The Liaison Office maintains an office library (open from Monday to Thursday 9-12)
where you can find all relevant ILO publications.
