It is estimated today that nearly 40 million people worldwide are infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) which ultimately causes the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The AIDS epidemic, which is recognized by the United Nations as "the most devastating disease humankind has ever faced," is seriously affecting all over the world.
Also in Japan, AIDS epidemic is spreading quietly but steadily to almost reach the critical level. In this context, the International Labour Organization (ILO) has published the guidelines to be used as a global standard for enterprises in its fight against this serious disease. The publication, "An ILO code of practice on HIV/AIDS and the world of work," clearly indicates that if enterprise does not have an active policy to fight AIDS, it will face great risks in various situations.
On the occasion of the publication of Japanese version of the Code by the ILO Tokyo Branch Office, the ILO and Sankei Shimbun have decided to hold fora on company HIV/AIDS policies in Tokyo and Kobe.
Viewing the HIV/AIDS policy from the two points of crisis management and mid- and long-term management strategy, the Fora will examine such issues as the necessity to support HIV-infected people, how to prevent the spreading of HIV/AIDS and the benefits to the company of investing to the employee's health management.
Mr. Assane Diop, Executive Director, ILO Social Protection Sector, who was deeply involved in the preparation of the Code, will deliver keynote address and Mr. Franklyn Lisk, Director, ILO Programme on HIV/AIDS and the World of Work, will provide comments during the discussion based on his international experience.
