On May 22, 2003, Vanuatu became the 176th member state of the ILO.

On 1st of August, ILO-Suva Director, Mr. A.M. Zakaria, met with the Vanuatu government ministers, officials, employers' and workers' organizations.

During the visit the following areas of assistance were requested:

  1. Attendance to the 13th International Industrial Relations Association Congress, Berlin;
  2. Training course on Conciliation and Mediation, Turin;
  3. Training course on International Labour Standards for Lawyers and Legal Educators
  4. Pilot Project for Employment through Skills Development;
  5. National Seminar on Fundamental Conventions and the Declaration and possible ratification of Fundamental Conventions;
  6. Attendance to Sub-Regional Seminar on Decent Work in Auckland;
  7. Review of selected Labour Legislations;
  8. Organization of a Tripartite Forum.
