Quick facts about Kiribati: 4 ILO Conventions ratified, land area is 810 sq km, population is about 84, 494, capital - Bariki Islet, Tarawa Atoll, languages are i-Kiribati and English.

Kiribati became a member of the ILO in the year 2000.

Like Fiji, PNG and the Solomon Islands, the Kiribati Decent Work Country Programme is underway. The first workshop on the development of a Decent Work Country Programme was held on the 14th of May 2003 in Tarawa. The workshop was attended by the Ministry of Labour, employers' and workers' organizations.

ILO activities in Kiribati concentrate mostly on the conceptualization of the role of ILO constituents in pursuing social and economic issues.

The major achievements of the ILO in Kiribati are:

Sector 1 - Standards & Fundamental Principals & Rights at Work

  1. Ratification of four fundamental conventions (C29, C87, C98 and C105)
  2. Translation of the fundamental conventions & Declaration into i-kiribati
  3. Review of Labour legislation in the light of ratified Conventions

Sector 2 - Decent employment & Income for all

  1. Development of cooperative policy and legislation and operational procedure
  2. Establishment of start your own business Association after organizing training for master trainers.
  3. Preliminary assistance in the setup of Labour Market Information databank and training of officials from the Ministry of Labour in the Labour Market Information System

Sector 3 : Social Protection for All

  1. Study on maritime workers
  2. Study on Kiribati social protection system
  3. Collection of socioeconomic data VOICENET
  4. Development of HIV Aids project targeting training for employers', workers' organization on work place policy.

Sector 4 : Tripartism and Social Dialogue

  1. Training of employers', workers' organization on institution building.
  2. Organization of seminar on tripartism
  3. Study on Globalization and workers' rights.
