This project is based in Manshera (North East Frontier Province) and covers the Balakot tehsil. It was developed as a response to assist the efforts of the Pakistan government to address the issue of child labour in areas affected by the devastating earthquake of October 2005. The destruction of educational facilities and resources meant that children, especially those who were orphaned or separated from their families were exposed to serious risks, including child labour.
The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the national efforts for the prevention and eventual elimination of child labour in the earthquake affected areas of Pakistan by focusing on the following components:
- mainstreaming of child labour issues in crisis situations within policy documents;
- capacity building of stakeholders;
- providing education and vocational training to children rescued from the worst forms of child labour; and
- linking of children and families with credit facilities and social safety nets.
This project targets 2500 children (1250 girls and 1250 boys) who are either at-risk of becoming engaged in child labour or those already part of it. A total of 28 rehabilitation centers have been established to provide non-formal education to children; vocational training to older children and micro-credit to families.
