This project focuses on children working in hazardous occupations under the most intolerable conditions ranging from exposure to chemicals and other harmful substances to long tedious working hours. It will cover all hazardous sectors and occupations identified by the Employment of Children Act, 1991.
The project aims to:
- promoting and replicating the "District Model" that has proven successful under on-going child labour projects in the target districts and beyond;
- institutional strengthening at the district, provincial and federal level through the capacity enhancement of respective chid labour units and the establishment of a child labour monitoring and referral system; and
- enhancing the child labour knowledge base (through the conduct of a second National Child Labour Survey and related research studies), and the promotion, development and adoption of pro-child policies and legislative framework.
This project works for the prevention and gradual elimination of the worst forms of child labour from formal and informal sectors in the target districts - Sukkur (Sindh) and Haripur (NWFP). Through various policy level and direct interventions, it aims to withdraw and prevent children from working in hazardous occupations. Direct interventions to the target beneficiaries in each district will include awareness raising on child labour issues among target communities, non-formal education to about 1,500 children (5-14 years), providing literacy and vocational training to about 2,000 children (15 - 17 years), mainstreaming non-formal education graduates to formal education system, training women belonging to target families on various income generation activities and linking them to micro-credit assistance.
