Publications and materials

Research and documentation is one of the key areas ILO's work. In order to synergize collaborative efforts, a consultation workshops were held periodically. Based on the suggestions provided in the workshops, various research areas are identified. Following are some of the studies carried out by the project:

  • Employers' Statement of Commitment on HIV/AIDS - (pdf 588 kb)
  • ILO and NACO have facilitated an Indian employers' statement of committment on HIV/AIDS. The statement is signed by seven national level employers' organizations in India: the All India Organisation of Employers (AIOE), Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), Employers' Federation of India (EFI), Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Laghu Udyog Bharati (LUB) and Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE). The Joint statement is expected to provide common guidelines to member companies for respondig to HIV/AIDS. The Statement also contains a working paper to provide practical guidelines to companies.   • Enhancing Business Response to HIV/AIDS in India - (pdf 525 kb)
  • This paper provides guidelines for enterprises to develop policies and programmes on HIV/AIDS. The rational for intiating workplace HIV/AIDS programme and basic questions on cost analysis has been addressed in this paper for the benefit of enterprises in India.

  • A Manual on HIV/AIDS for Trade Union Representative - (pdf 1.52 mb)
  • Considering the unique characteristics of Trade Unions and their efforts in integrating HIV/AIDS education into workers' educational programmes, a Resource Manual for Trade Unions has been developed.

    The manual aims to enhance the knowledge base of Trade Unions on STIs/HIV/AIDS, orient them to the magnitude of problem, country response and relevance of HIV/AIDS as an issue for the world of work. The resource manual provides information on general as well as technical issues surrounding HIV/AIDS. It contains notes for resource persons and handouts on various topics. The Manual was pre-tested in two workshops organized for representatives from all central trade unions. The Indian National Trade Unions Congress (INTUC) and the Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS) collaborated with ILO to organise the workshops for the trade union leaders.

  • A Handbook: Trade Unions HIV/AIDS - (pdf 2.95 mb)
  • This handbook aims at providing guidelines to workers' organizations to help them initiate policies and programmes to combat HIV/AIDS. It compliments ongoing Trade Union efforts in understanding HIV/AIDS issues in the context of the world of work, and also the role they could constructively play in addressing HIV/AIDS through their networks and exsting programmes. The handbook focuses on:

    • Enhancing the knowledge level of trade unions about STIs/HIV/AIDS;
    • Enabling the trade unions appreciate their role in developing policy and programmes on HIV/AIDS; and
    • Providing guidelines to trade unions to help them play their role effectively in strengthening the world of work response to HIV/AIDS.

  • A Film: Joining Hands
  • The film Joining Hands, is a multimedia advocacy tool designed for use by Trade Unions in their educational programmes.

  • A Resource Manual on HIV/AIDS for Training of Education Officers of Central Board for Workers Education (CBWE) - (pdf 5.89 mb)
  • This Resource Manual is an tool to upgrade the knowledge base of Workers' Education Officers on STI/HIV/AIDS, provide them with technical information on issues related to HIV prevention and care, and enable them to integrate HIV/AIDS sessions in their educational programmes with the formal as well as informal sector workers. It contains notes for the resource persons and practical handouts on various HIV/AIDS related topics. It is developed as a five-day Training of Trainers programme, which facilitates learning through participatory adult learning techniques and provides an opportunity to the participants to practice their sessions.

  • A Resource Toolkit Enterprises HIV/AIDS in India - (pdf 3.31 mb)
  • This is a resource toolkit developed to help Indian enterprises to respond to the challenges of HIV/AIDS. It brings Enterprises & HIV/AIDS in India together the experiences of some of the leading Indian enterprises and demonstrates that there are practical solutions and initiatives to develop effective responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and mitigate its impact. This package contains:

  • Report on the Study of Socio-economic Impact of HIV/AIDS on PLWHA and their Families - (pdf 321 kb)

    ILO conducted a study in four states - Delhi, Manipur, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, through the networks of People living with HIV/AIDS. The sample included about 292 direct interviews (of which 42 per cent were women), Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and In-depth Interviews (IDIs). The main objectives of the study were to:

    • a) Document the overall experiences of PLWHA and their familes since the detection of HIV status. The parameters included stigma faced, impact on employment status, family income and expenditure, availability of care and support services etc.; and
    • b) Understand the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and children.

    Key findings suggest that HIV virus has, in general made a deeper impact on People Living with HIV/AIDS and particularly women, who have faced more discrimination, more hardships, and had to assume more responsibilities.

  • Card game on HIV/AIDS

    To make learning on HIV/AIDS more interactive a card game on HIV/AIDS information is developed. This game helps in conducting HIV/AIDS sessions in a structured manner. The pack contains a set of 20 Questions and Answers on STI/HIV/AIDS. The questions cover issues such as basic information on HIV/AIDS, prevention, testing, treatment, stigma discrimination and rights of People Living with HIV/AIDS.

  • CD containing TV spots on HIV/AIDS produced for use of trainers and enterprises.
  • Posters

    A set of six posters on HIV/AIDS and the world of work has been developed. These posters were launched on the World AIDS Day 2002. Four of these posters (1-8 in English and Hindi) are meant for advocacy with government, enterprises, employers' and workers' organizations, and two posters (9-12 in English and Hindi) aim at creating awareness on routes of transmission of HIV. The posters are available in English as well as Hindi. The posters are useful for display at the workplaces.
