This article looks at the threats posed to working conditions by globalisation of the economy. It argues that, while women in developing countries are not only among those most open to exploitation, and are often in the forefront of local resistance, their views are not being heard in international debates on how to protect labour standards. Using time-series data from 1960 to 1985 for Bangladesh, Korea and the Philippines, this paper examines gender and income inequalities and investigates whether income growth and structural transformation are improving women’s status and decreasing gender inequalities in education and employment, as well as improving income distribution in rural and urban areas.
