This manual comprises seven modules. It includes a description of the development of the training programme and the role of Back Home Action Plans and workshops. The manual was developed to share the experiences of an ILO training programme for extension workers to assist rural women in Zimbabwe through microenterprise development. It is intended for use by those who design training programmes in small enterprise development for extension workers, who, in turn, assist rural women with their income generating activities. In addition, trainers in small enterprise development may refer to this manual for course material. The manual, from cover to cover, is available on diskette. This offers the opportunity for the user to adapt the session guidelines to specific needs, to change the handouts for the participants where necessary, and to include case studies and stories which are based on the experiences of women’s groups in your area.

This report comprises an evaluation of the implementation of a project in Bangladesh focusing on improving women’s access to new technology, economic resources, employment opportunities and skills training. The project emphasised the financial, institutional and environmental sustainability of the new income-earning opportunities created. Tangible improvements were noted in the self-organisational and self-management capacity of women’s groups and counterpart officials. However, lack of physical infrastructure, limited purchasing power in rural areas, high illiteracy and low technical skills among poor rural women were major constraints. The report includes lessons learned and recommendations.
