ILO RESPONSE ON EARTHQUAKE IN YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA

Brief Information:

Yogyakarta’s Earthquake on 27 May 2006 (5:54am) 5.9 at Richter scale;
Death toll estimates 4,962 to 6,234 persons;
Injury estimates range from 33,852 to 57,790 persons;
Number of people displaced 200,000 to 650,000 persons;
60,000 houses are damaged, 300,000 houses need to be repaired and 15,000 latrines need to be built;
Yogyakarta has a total areas of 3,185.80 sq kilometres with population approximately three million (2003);
The most affected areas are Bantul (506.86 sq km), Sleman (574.82 sq km) and Klaten, Central Java (574.82 sq km).
