ILO SYMPOSIUM AT THE 8TH REGIONAL CONGRESS ON ASIA AND THE PACIFIC IN SRI LANKA
COLOMBO (ILO News) - The International Labour Organization (ILO) is to hold a symposium on 21 August at the 8th Regional Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP) in Colombo. The ILO will provide practical examples of workplace good practice and launch discussions on a major new initiative for an international labour standard on HIV/AIDS.

"The world of work presents itself as an ideal place where concrete measures towards attitudinal changes, value transformation and disseminating information relating to HIV/AIDS can be successfully undertaken," says Ms. Tine Staermose, Director, ILO Office in Sri Lanka. The ILO Colombo office being a technical corporation agency seeks to enhance the capacity of employers, workers and the Ministry of Labour Relations and Manpower (MOLR&MP) to plan and implement policies and programs for prevention of HIV/AIDS in workplaces through its ILO/USDOL International HIV/AIDS Workplace Education Program.

TO FOCUS ON ELIMINATION OF CHILD LABOUR IN AGRICULTURE
ILO marked World Day Against Child Labour on 12th June 2007. This year's theme marking World Day Against Child Labour is the elimination of child labour in Agriculture. To commemorate the occasion, ILO's implementing partners, the National Workers Congress and Don Bosco will be co-hosting an Event in Ahungalle to mark World Day Against Child Labour.

The Tripartite Constituents Join Hands to Soften the Blow of HIV/AIDS
COLOMBO (ILO news): The Tripartite constituents in a historic move will sign a National Tripartite Declaration on Prevention of HIV/AIDS in Workplaces in Sri Lanka at 5.00pm today at the Ministry of Labour Relations & Manpower. The Declaration was a result of several consultations and meetings the Ministry of Labour Relations & Manpower had with Employers' Organizations and Trade Unions facilitated by the ILO. The Declaration endorses the guidelines of the ILO Code of Practice on HIV/AIDS in the World of Work.

Lanka despite significant progress in advancing gender equality
An ILO research study on “Beyond Glass Ceilings
and Brick Walls -Gender at the Workplace” written
by Ms. Maithree Wickramasinghe and Dr. Wijaya Jayatilaka,
will be launched on the 08th of August 2006 at the Ceylon
Continental Hotel. This publication is based on a study commissioned
by the International Labour Organization (ILO) with the assistance
of Employers’ Federation of Ceylon with the aim of assessing
barriers that exist in the workplace for women workers and
women managers at various levels of the Sri Lankan private
sector.
The Employers’ Federation of Ceylon established its
network on Disability in June 2005, with the principal objective
of enhancing employment opportunities in the private sector
for disabled persons. In setting up the Network, the EFC has
not only recognized the importance of involving people with
disabilities in the mainstream of economic life, but also
the importance of tapping the vast pool of talent among the
disabled for the mutual benefit of the private sector and
of persons with disabilities. The EFC views this as an ideal
opportunity for private sector enterprises to assist in building
a more inclusive society.
Female
migrant workers need special and urgent attention !
International migration is a global phenomenon. Many men and
women migrate in search of employment to countries where they
will be better paid than in their home country. It is estimated
that female migrants make up almost half of migrant workers
in the world today.
The ILO just produced a video entitled AbilityAsia that is
designed to promote employment of people with disabilities
by showing powerful images of them working productively and
by giving voice to employers who praise their capabilities.
Narrated by Michelle Cheung of CNBC, the video encourages
employers to hire workers with disabilities by identifying
specific benefits and begins to educate employers about methods
of integrating workers with disabilities into mainstream workplaces.
Sri
Lanka Labour Ministry adapts E-Learning for employee training.
(Colombo, Sri Lanka) Ministry of Labour Relations and Foreign
Employment, in collaboration with the Colombo Office of the
International Labour Organization has initiated an E-Learning
program to train labour officers, labour commissioners, and
staff members.

According to the ILO an estimated 36.5 million people of working
age have HIV and by next year the global labour force will
have lost as many as 28 million workers due to AIDS since
the start of the epidemic.

ISHA (Industrial Safety and Health Association)
The ISHA (Industrial Safety and Health Association, which
is a tripartite body) will be conducting an Art Poster Competition
on the 14th of October 2005 to Mark the National Safety Week
which falls in the 2nd week of October.

law and liberal arts – women outnumber men.

Norway
to assist ILO in tsunami rehabilitation work
The Norwegian government has provided the International Labour
Organization (ILO) with Rs. 180 million to speed up the tsunami
rehabilitation work in Sri Lanka. Norway, in co-operation
with ILO, aims to contribute to social and economic reconstruction
and poverty reduction in tsunami affected communities.

12 JUNE 2005
(ILO news) – Removing more than one million children
who work in mines and quarries from one of the worst forms
of child labour will be the focus of events around the world
marking the World Day Against Child Labour on 12 June.
In the beginning of January, based on general and incomplete
situation reports, the International Labour Organisation (ILO)
made a preliminary estimate that total jobs and livelihood
losses due to the tsunami numbered about 400,000.

ESTIMATES 1 MILLION PEOPLE LOST LIVELIHOOD IN SRI LANKA AND
INDONESIA
The International Labour Office (ILO) today urged that “employment-intensive”
jobs creation strategies be integrated into the humanitarian
and reconstruction response to the earthquake and tsunami
disaster in Asia that destroyed the livelihoods of an estimated
1 million persons in Indonesia and Sri Lanka alone.

In the aftermath of the tsunami, International Women’s
Day (March 8th) 2005 takes the theme in Asia, “Rebuilding
Women’s Lives in the Aftermath of Disaster”. The
United Nations theme of this year’s International Women’s
Day, 8 March 2005, is “Gender Equality Beyond 2005:
Building a more secure future”.
