Advocacy Strategy is endorsed by the National Council for Children

Date: 3 May 2007
Areas of work: Child Labour
Region/Country: Mongolia
Organized by: ILO / Mongolian National Council for Children
Contact: Ms. N. Mongolmaa, National Programme Manager

An Advocacy Strategy on the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour was endorsed on 3 May 2007 by the National Council for Children chaired by the Prime Minister of Mongolia Mr. M. Enkhbold. The strategy was developed through a consultative process involving officials from the Ministry of Social Welfare and Labour, National Authority for Children, Mongolian Employers Federation, Confederation of Mongolian Trade Unions and Press Institute and NGOs, with a technical support from the ILO’s International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (ILO/IPEC Mongolia).

The main goal of the strategy is to sensitize and mobilize the main stakeholders and the public towards concerted and sustainable actions for the eradication of the worst forms of child labour in Mongolia. The advocacy strategy aims at raising awareness among decision makers, children, parents, media, the general public and all concerned about the issues of child labour, putting the issue of elimination of the worst forms of child labour on the public agenda, influencing policy and legislative changes and reforms, mobilizing relevant stakeholders and building support for acting on both the problem and the solution.

Nation-wide implementation of the strategy will contribute to a shift in attitudes about child labour in society, which in turn creates public demand for policy reforms, and thus to changes in legislation, programmes and budgets.

The Prime Minister speaking at the meeting emphasized that “the endorsement of the advocacy strategy has shown once again the continued commitment of the Government of Mongolia to protect every Mongolian child from the worst forms of child labour. The significance of the advocacy strategy is it will support the translation of commitments into concrete actions”.

The Advocacy Strategy, covering the period from 2007 to 2011, will serve as a guiding document for sensitization and mobilization against the worst forms of child labour at all levels and for all concerned stakeholders. The strategy will be officially launched on the World Day Against Child Labour on 12 June 2007.
