As one of the founding countries, China has been a member of the International Labour Organization since 1919. The ILO carries out a variety of activities in China, including consultations on international labour standards, labour market policies, gender equality, youth employment, occupational safety and health, social security and collective bargaining. The current ILO biennial technical cooperation programme focuses on the following priorities:
- Promoting employment and reducing inequality and poverty with a particular emphasis on facilitating, supporting and protecting surplus rural labour migration to urban areas;
- Promoting international labour standards, rights at work and corporate social responsibility;
- Improving and linking social protection with the achievement of sustained quality development and productivity;
- Improving labour management, dispute resolution, Labour Law enforcement and tripartite mechanisms.
