Monday, 30 April 2007

Representatives of workers, employers, business associations, youth groups, government departments along with migrant workers will take part in a Labour Day march against child labour in Chiang Rai on 1 May.

The aim of the march is to raise public awareness about the problem of child labour and efforts to eliminate the worst forms of child labour. The march will also set the scene for the planned signing ceremony of the new Action Programme for Prevention and Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour, scheduled to be held in Chiang Rai on 3 May.

About 1,000 people, including representatives of almost 100 businesses and, youth councils are expected to participate in the march which will begin at the Suan Tung Municipal Park at 8.30am on 1 May. They will walk along Tanawalai Road , Trairat Road and Sanambin Road to Ban San Kong School (Chiang Rai Charoonrat) where further events will be held all day.

There will be an exhibition of entries to the painting and slogan contests, and presentation of prizes to the winners.  Sports competitions, shows and games will be head throughout the day.  Thai and migrant workers will compete in sports to strengthen relations.

Labour officials will man an information desk, answering questions and offering information on labour rights, social security, workplace safety and health, and the ILO’s conventions relating to child labour (Convention No. 182 on the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour and Convention No. 138 on Minimum Age, 1973.)

Thailand ratified Convention No. 182 in 2001 and Convention No. 138 in 2004.  Since then the Royal Thai Government has been working to fulfill its obligations under the conventions, including preparing a National Plan of Action to Combat the Worst Forms of Child Labour which pay particular attention to the issues of slavery, prostitution, pornography, illicit drugs and work which is harmful to the health, safety and morals of children.

The event is organized by the Chiang Rai Provincial Office of Labour with support from the ILO.
