Low-cost, easy-to-apply ways of improving safety and health at work will be demonstrated at a two-day workshop in Baotou , Inner-Mongolia Autonomous Region, China . The training, on 29-30 September, is being organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and funded by the Japanese Government.

More than 30 participants from six cities in three provinces will attend the workshop. It will be led by Dr. Tsuyoshi Kawakami, Occupational Safety and Health Specialist at the ILO Subregional Office for East Asia in Bangkok.    

The trainees will learn about creating a good physical working environment, good workstation design, safe ways to handle materials and operate machines, welfare facilities and work organization. 

The participants come from the cities of Zhangjakou, Shijiazhuang, Jilin, Changchun, Baotou and Tongliao in the provinces of Hebai , Jilin and Inner Mongolia .  They include national, provincial and local government officials as well as trainers from local “Start Your Business” schemes.

Dr. Kawakami said:  “This workshop will show that significant health and safety improvements can be made using simple, low-cost, measures and techniques. By improving health and safety businesses can enhance productivity and well as improve the conditions of their workers.” 

The workshop is part of the ILO/Japan Multi-bilateral Programme in China which is active in six pilot cities in China . The programme offers comprehensive, integrated support to laid-off and unemployed workers to help them start and improve their own businesses and create jobs. In Baotou city around 3,800 people (more than half of them women) have received training in business awareness and business planning since the programme started in 2002.
