Launch of Global Report under the follow-up to the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work
Friday, 9 May 2003

BANGKOK (ILO News) – The elimination of discrimination at work is essential if the values of human dignity and individual freedom, social justice and social cohesion are to go beyond formal proclamations. ‘Time for equality at work’, the fourth global report under the follow-up to the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, examines the diverse forms of discrimination at work that have been identified and formally condemned nationally and internationally.

Two panels, focusing on policy issues and gender perspectives, respectively, will explore specific areas of the report in detail, including such issues as migration, home workers, indigenous peoples and the informal sector, as well as the important gender dimension.

Panelists include Khun Siriwan Romchatthong, Executive Director of the Employers’ Confederation of Thailand (ECOT), Khun Rakawin Leechanavanichpan, Coordinator of Homenet Thailand and Lucy Lazo, Director of UNIFEM. Time will be allotted for questions from the floor following each session.

Please find the executive summary of the report attached for your information. Please note that there is an embargo of 12 May, 2003 on coverage of the report.
