4. SUMMARY OF PROPOSALS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Foreword

Factual and adequate labour market information is required for formulating and monitoring labour market policies. This information needs to be regular, reliable and timely, and should relate to other relevant sets of information as part of an overall integrated statistical system.

This report attempts to assess the existing labour market information system in Cambodia, review user needs in labour statistics and propose statistical activities to develop and improve the existing system.

A draft of this document was produced jointly by the Ministry of Social Affairs, Labour and Veterans Affairs (MOSALVA) and an ILO consultant, Mr. O. Perez de Tagle, in late August 1995 under an ILO-funded programme, Strengthening Labour and Employment Policies in Cambodia, the Lao People's Democratic Republic and Viet Nam.

This report was prepared under the direction of Mr. Robert Pember, Senior Labour Statistics Specialist, ILO/EASMAT. It is based on a detailed report entitled "Towards an improved labour market information system: Cambodia" which focuses on the following:

This work culminated in the preparation of a summary project outline for setting up a system of labour statistics which is summarized at the end of the publication.

An even more detailed set of statistical reporting forms and currently available statistics was also compiled under the consultancy, which is too voluminous to be included here. Selected components are available, on request, from MOSALVA or the ILO/EASMAT.

We would like to express our thanks to all who cooperated and collaborated in the implementation of this work.
