The ILO/Japan Tripartite Regional Meeting on Youth Employment in Asia and the Pacific was held  at the United Nations Conference Centre Room 3, Rajadamnern Nok Avenue, Bangkok during 27 February - 1 March 2002.  The meeting was participated by representatives of governments, employers and workers from eight countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The objective of this meeting was to provide a forum to identify and discuss key issues related to youth employment, as well as for the tripartite participants to work together to develop strategies and policies to promote youth employment.

In preparation for this meeting, preparatory research was conducted in the second half of 2001.  The research comprised three thematic research on youth statistics, active labour market policies and best practices in promotion of youth employment through information and communication technology (ICT), and country studies on youth employment.  Following the thematic research and country studies country workshops were held in six countries throughout January and February 2002.  Countries where national workshops were held include Australia, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.

At the country workshops participants were encouraged to formulate national strategies for youth employment and develop national proposals for pilot projects.  On the basis of group discussions drawing on country experiences, national workshops and research materials, it is hoped that youth strategies can be outlined that will contribute to formulating and implementing policies and programmes to place young people in decent work.  Special attention will be paid to providing opportunities for young women and disadvantaged youth.
