Launch Labour Law Network

The Launch Labour Law (LLL) Project was initiated in the fall of 2003 to address the fundamental weakness of the social law research and education capabilities in Asia, which hamper the development of the ILO’s promotional activities in standard-setting and follow-up of important instruments, such as the Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.  The lack of information and awareness on ILO standards in the Asian region, in particular, is the result of ignorance on ILO standards among the professional groups and among the general public.  A fundamental strategy must be drawn up to raise genuine awareness among the legal practitioners, in particular legal professionals and would-be professionals., i.e., university students.

Objectives

  • Up-lifting of labour law scholarship and thereby promoting the status of labour law in general
  • Improve the impact of International Labour Standards on labour law
  • Support higher ratification and application rates of International Labour Standards in Asia

Activities

First Phase (2003) - the First Network Conference was held in Singapore

Second Phase (2004) – National seminars held in participating countries: China, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.  A Network Point Meeting was held in Beijing.

Third Phase (2005) – National Seminar held in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Mongolia.  First training course for Labour Law researchers and practitioners were held at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan.
