Advocacy
Advocacy means many things to many people.
To us, advocacy is both a process and a tool used to bring about the required changes in policy, attitudes and public participation in the fight against trafficking and labour exploitation.
From helping young people in marginalized and vulnerable communities of the GMS find their collective voice to take part in the counter-trafficking policy debate, to working with our constituents - the Governments, Workers' and Employers' Organizations - who want to speak out about what's working and what isn't in the fight against trafficking and labour exploitation.
In 2004 and again in 2007, we sponsored a series of Children and Youth Forums on Human Trafficking. In partnership with Save the Children UK (and later also with World Vision and the UNIAP) we brought young people from vulnerable trafficking-prone communities face to face with Government Officials from the GMS countries. They discussed, debated and worked through the issues affecting young people - and, as a result of this initiative, in December 2007 the Governments of all the GMS countries jointly agreed to directly and regularly consult young people on ways to respond to trafficking and labour/sexual exploitation.
