WORKSHOP WRAP UP
The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare and the ILO organized the National Tripartite Workshop on OSH at the Novotel Rim Pae Hotel, Rayong Province (4-6 July 2000). The 42 participants were drawn from both the public and private sectors, from among employers and workers, and from among NGOs and academic institutions. Workshop sessions involved panel discussions, group discussions and workplace visits.
The workshop focused on
- tripartite collaboration among competent authorities and other relevant organizations working on prevention of major chemical hazards;
- implementation of the ILO core Conventions No. 155 (Occupational Safety and Health) and No. 174 (Prevention of Major Industrial Accidents);
- development and gazetting of an OSH Act and implementation consistent with ILO core Conventions; and
- improved OSH collaboration among the competent authorities.
Following the discussions, all participants agreed to propose the establishment of a national committee on major hazard control led by the competent authorities.
In order to follow up more efficiently, the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare was requested to ratify ILO core Convention No. 155 (Occupational Safety and Health); develop and gazette the OSH Act, which is to protect all occupations and be consistent with ILO Convention No. 155; establish a national committee on major hazard control; and implement an OSH programme appropriate for Thailand in the 21st century.
