Conclusion
  • Voluntary safety committees at the community level would be good idea. In many big companies there are safety and health committees having regular meetings and consisting of employer and worker representatives, of whom many are volunteers. The committee members would walk through working areas and make suggestions for improvement.
  • Subcontractors (when giving out work to homeworkers) should take responsibility for informing them on the safe handling of chemicals.
  • Workers should be made aware of and provided with knowledge to prevent occupational hazards which may result from their work. Risk control can be exercised with proper labeling of chemicals, display safety data sheets and other useful information (as referred to in the ILO Chemicals Convention, 1990, No. 170).
  • The proposal to have a village of handicrafts and also develop it into a tourist attraction should be pursued. This could also help entrepreneurship development
  • Training courses and awareness raising workshops can be organized at minimal cost. If no funds are available for training activities, this could be done at the community level, without having to pay high costs. There are many examples of low-cost training courses.
  • WISE participatory training methodology and Job Safety Analysis (JSA) together would provide the best results in improving OSH at the community level according to the homeworkers' groups.
