Application of WISE in a bronze workers' cooperative in Bangkok

A second panel discussion was held to share experiences on action by NICE, Homenet affiliates including a bronze workers' cooperative to assess and improve safety and health among their members. The panelists were:

  • Ms. Sudthida Krungkraiwong (NICE)
  • Ms. Rakawin Leechanavanichpan (Homenet)
  • Mr. Somkid Duang-ngen (BCHPC).

Main points raised were:

  • Recently, Homenet Thailand had completed 12 studies on occupational safety and health risks of home-based workers in the North, the Northeast and in Bangkok, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health. These studies covered workers involved in manufacturing and farming under subcontracting arrangements as well as independent own account workers.
  • Utilizing the WISE methodology, NICE had documented safety and health practices and hazards in 15 provinces. Work safety analyses had been undertaken, easy-to-use brief checklists and safe practice guidelines had been developed to provide workers with information, and allow for systematic step-by-step improvements.
  • In preparation of the field visit to the Bangkok Community Handicraft Promotion Centre (BCHPC), the representative of this bronze workers' cooperative indicated that the work was hazardous. Workers had difficulties with machines which had resulted in accidents leading to death and disability (for example, loss of eye-sight). The workers had therefore agreed to participate in a pilot one-day WISE workshop. Participants had appreciated the training and made several changes. The most important ones related to improvement of both living and working conditions, by partitioning the house and the set up of better work stations with attention to right postures and simple ergonomic measures. Participants were given an overview of the production process, which involved preparing the metal and molds, pouring of the hot metal in the molds, and several rounds of filing and finishing, including sand blasting.
