3. Purpose, Responsibilities and Activities

    3.1 Purpose (mission, mandate) of the organization

    The aims of the Department are to provide chemical, physical and biological analysis services to governmental and private organizations, and also carry out research works on the utilization of the nation's natural resources and industrial and agricultural wastes for economic benefit. Additionally, the Department provides analysis and testing services in order to control and certify the quality of industrial products, food and beverages, as well as provides consult and trouble shooting service for industry. The Department offers analytical chemistry training for university students and personnel of the various governmental and industrial laboratories, and renders services concerning scientific and technological information. The Department also establishes, maintains and disseminates the national measurement standards in science and technology as well as provides calibration, training and other related measurement services to industries and other agencies.

3. Purpose, Responsibilities and Activities

    3.1 Purpose (mission, mandate) of the organization

    A primary responsibility of the Environmental Impact Evaluation Division is to comment on environmental impact assessment (EIA) reports of development projects, submitted to OEPP as required by law.
    An essential element of the EIA reports, especially those of industrial projects, includes an evaluation of the impact from the proposed project on the health and safety of the workers as well as those of the surrounding communities. This covers a range of aspects, such as risk analysis, proper handling of chemicals, mitigation measures, and contingency plan.
    The main aims of the Division are to prevent occupational accidents and diseases and minimize adverse impacts on the environment.
