In 2002, the local ILO office translated the ILO Code of Practice for Managing Disability in the Workplace and launched the Code as part of the UN International Day of Disabled Persons. As a follow-up, the ILO regional office in collaboration with the ILO office in Nepal and the National Federation of Disabled---Nepal held a tripartite meeting on Decent Work and People with Disabilities. The meeting was well attended, led to the identification of exemplary employers who have hired disabled persons and resulted in a series of concrete recommendations for action, including the establishment of a disability commission to develop policy and oversee its implementation. Media attention was excellent and included television coverage, a press conference and several print stories to bring attention to the training and employment needs of disabled persons in Nepal. |
